Severina Batista

Severina Francisca Ramos was born in 1933 in Tracunhaém, Pernambuco State. She would help her mother, who made earthenware, by collecting clay and firewood and continued doing this when she married a ceramist. She was a helper for a long time but when she was 40 years old she took the opportunity to produce her own figures. Her sculptures are distinguished by their expressive strength and creativity. She works with natural clay, making figures 30-40cm in height. She creates saints, animals and zoo-anthropomorphic figures, sharing the finishing touches with her husband, who is in charge of finishing the base and also hollowing out the pieces to make them light.
