Although Catholicism is the prevailing religion in Brazil, its traditions and liturgy acquired new features from the contact with different cultures, that has taken place since the early days of Portuguese colonization. Adopted as the religion of the landowning/ruling class, Catholicism was adapted in a unique way, producing in the Brazilian people a syncretic religiosity, in which Christian dogma does not necessarily exclude other beliefs of African, Indian and even European origins. In folk art, the production of religious inspiration is very intense, combining styles and aesthetic results that are quite diverse. Besides the works inspired by Catholicism, there is a vast repertoire of works related to Umbanda and Candomblé, as well as their rituals and variations on the theme.
